Understanding dog coat types
Coat type, more than breed name, decides how often your dog needs grooming and what happens during an appointment.

Curly coats
Poodles, cockapoos and similar coats keep growing and trap loose hair, so they mat quickly without regular brushing right down to the skin. Most need professional grooming every six to eight weeks alongside frequent home brushing.
Double coats
Breeds such as huskies, collies and German shepherds have a dense undercoat that sheds seasonally. They usually need de-shedding rather than clipping, and clipping a double coat can change how it regrows.
Wire coats
Terriers and similar wire coats often suit hand stripping, which removes dead hair by hand and keeps the texture and colour of the coat. Not every groomer offers it, so it is worth checking.
Smooth coats
Short, smooth coats still benefit from bathing, nail care and ear checks even though they need no clipping.
